We at Kuiken Brothers are proud of our history. Our lives and work have been ingrained in the local landscape for nearly one hundred years. We’re even more pleased to tell you our story.

1970’s through Today – Community Recognition and Expansion

After nearly 40 years of service, Edward retired in 1982, Richard in 1983, and Nick H. in 1984 and all remain on the Board of Directors of The Kuiken Brothers Company. Regrettably Evan passed away in 2008.  All of the US-born Kuikens were born, raised and remain residents of Fair Lawn. Several streets in Fair Lawn are named after members of the Kuiken family. George and Edward Streets are located side-by-side on the south side of Rte. 208. Kuiken Terrace is located off Saddle River Road in an area of Fair Lawn where the streets are named after former mayors.
The Kuiken Brothers Company has been recognized several times for its civic contributions. In April of 1984, The Kuiken Brothers Company was presented with a Certificate of Award from the Borough of Lincoln Park Office of the Mayor for its contribution to the Associated Churches Flood Relief the previous year.

In January 1982, the Greater Paterson Chamber of Commerce presented the company with a “Half-Century Club” award. In 1987, the company was commended for its 75th anniversary by then New Jersey Governor Thomas H. Kean.

In 1990, Kuiken Brothers opened its second store, located in Emerson, NJ. In March of 1997, the company was awarded the Golden Hammer Award from Paterson Habitat for Humanity for 12 years of support. New President Doug Kuiken received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Fair Lawn Chamber of Commerce for chairing the Chamber’s adoption of the Rte. 208 & Fair Lawn Avenue intersection and donating many materials for its improvement.

Since opening the second location in Emerson in 1990, Kuiken Brothers has opened 7 additional locations and made some key acquisitions to meet the needs of our customers.  We have opened locations in Midland Park, Ogdensburg, Wantage, Succasunna, New Jersey and one Warwick, NY, we well as Elmwood Supply in Garfield, NJ (specializing in commercial building materials, doors and hardware).  The most recent addition to our company was the acquisition of Lumber 1 in Roseland, NJ, offering even greater convenience to builders, remodelers and their customers in the Essex, Hudson, Morris and Union counties.
